Do you think of yourself as a creative person?

I don’t know what you thought when you read that question, but if you answered “yes”, then you’re correct! If you answered “no” or “not really” then I want to challenge you. You are more creative than you think.

In Genesis 1:27 it says, “So God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

We are each made in the image of a creative God - and that makes us creative too, even if we don’t know it.

Do you know when the first instance of the Holy Spirit filling someone is in the Bible? Can you guess for what purpose that person was filled with the Spirit?

It was for creativity!

In Exodus 31 God says to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel… and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze,  to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.”

So a creative God has made us in his own image, and filled us with his Spirit for creativity.

I don’t know what you think of when you think of creativity. Perhaps you think of a painter, or potter, sculptor or dancer. Maybe you don’t think of someone who’s particularly practical or down to earth. There are different ways to be creative though - and some can be super practical!

I have a friend who worked on creative solutions for crisp factories to save water, and another friend working on making industrial washing machines better at dealing with microplastics. They’re both extremely practical and very creative. In fact God has given each of us unique creative gifts and unique ways to express our creativity. 

I wonder what your kind of creativity looks like? Have you ever thought about how God could use the unique creative gifts he’s given you? 

Have you ever thought about how you could even use your creativity for mission? If God made us to be missional - to tell others about him - and he made us to be creative, then surely we should be creative in the way we do mission? When we use the unique creative gifts we’ve been given, we actually become far more effective in mission. People are far more likely to respond positively to our message when we share in a way that is true to who we are and is uniquely creative rather than when we try to just copy someone else.

So my challenge to you today is: What creative ways can you think of to share your faith?
